[DISC] Chainsaw Man - Ch. 140 links Discussion

u/Brushatti Sep 12 '23
- How does swordsman know denji, is he katanaman reincarnate? 2. Is Nobana a Kobeni joke? 3. Why does Barem look so familiar, or am I trippin
1
u/Mikeathyxp 2d ago
Swordman and Barem fought the pochita version of chainsaw man back in chapter 87. Katana man and swordman are two different people if you look at chapter 87.

u/Coffeyinn Aug 30 '23
The next 10 chapters are going to be wild. I can't wait to taste what Fujimoto cooks.

I'm so confused, what is even going on
23
u/Glitchy13 Aug 29 '23
this chapter was kinda just to show off how batshit insane the CSM church is. It’s literally a cult and it seems some weapons are being played again (Sword man) and others are behind the scenes on this whole thing (Barem).

In terms of the structure of a hero's story, the first part could be referred to as "The Birth of a Hero," while the second part seems to be the "Trial of the Hero." The trial imposed upon Denji is indeed the moment of decision, a topic that is quite common, yet how Fujimoto invests in this subject is a flavor I've never tasted before.
In Volume 12, Denji doesn't give a damn about the choice Cockroach Demon or Yoshida gives him, but when Nayuta is involved, Denji is forced to accept options that only bring him despair. I am really looking forward to the process of how Denji makes the final decision and what the consequences will be.
4
u/Gmknewday1 Aug 29 '23
It does feel like Nayuta is being used aganist Denji
He does care for her like a little sister and clearly wants to give her a good life, a life her previous self didn't get to have
But like with his friends before, his want to keep his friends/family is used to force him down certain paths
Like with what Makima did to him, manipulating things to where he'd have to not only kill one of his friends but would open the door so SHE could kill another right in front of him
I feel the church wpuld 100% try to do something to Nayuta to force Denji to side with them
3
u/cruel-oath Aug 27 '23
The cost will probably be the world or something to that effect, considering the prophecy
39
u/Vlad_The_Great_2 Aug 26 '23
This chapter was eerie. This is starting to feel like the last act of devil man right before the world went to hell.

31
u/DawnB17 Aug 25 '23
Kinda love the slower pacing of this part so far, it's clearly building up to some big things and setting a lot of major pieces in place. The developing Chainsaw Man Cult and the Nostradamus prophecy simmering in the background have equally piqued my curiosity and dread. I anticipate some really fucked up things happening at the will of the Chainsaw Cult soon.
7
u/MyJawHurtsALot Aug 27 '23
I anticipate some really fucked up things happening at the will of the Chainsaw Cult soon.
Or already happening, that we've yet to discover.
They've already got child marriage and a tower building, so god knows what else they've been cooking.

How is anyone enjoying this garbage ? This series is a shell of its former self. Barely a husk and not entertaining.
7
u/wicked_symposium Aug 28 '23
I am not forming an opinion until part 2 is near completion. I thought part 1 was lightweight until the gun devil now I love all of it. it seems messy to me but I enjoy denji and asa.
2
u/Eagle_2000 Aug 28 '23
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, I do disagree with you, but I completely understand where this is coming from.
Feels way more stale than part 1.

I do like how until now everyone has been living in this completely batshit insane world but still managed to keep it together. Now that last straw fell, broke the camel's back and we have the Chainsawman church

I feel like in part 2 they will introduce a new system where they can kill hybrid, otherwise it would be really boring to have them all there with 0 risk.
Just something from the top of my head.
Edit: poor English
19
u/Celika76 Aug 24 '23
they can kill hybrid
Until now hybrids have been revived as they were killed "clean", I mean their triggers were intact. But I thinks they are immortal until some point, if you put one of them into acid, or an incinerator, or nuke them,... making their trigger destroyed, they probably can die for good.

16
u/cruel-oath Aug 24 '23
I’ve seen some theories Yoru will eat them for a power up
7
u/Poverty_King Aug 25 '23
Yeah, it makes sense for Yoru to use them in some way. Her whole deal is making weapons, and these guys are all weapon hybrids.
6
u/Sir_FastSloth Aug 24 '23
Wow that actually make a lot sense....just hope she is not eating them like Denji did to Makima
26

I really want to know what the fuck the Higashiyama family's parents have done to their children to make them such absolute shaky chihuahuas
5
u/shortstack03 Aug 26 '23
SHAKEY CHIHUHUAS LMAO SO ACCURATE it really makes me wonder how the other children turned out bc there's at least one more brother right? Is he normal, going to college and stuff???

u/bjcat666 Aug 23 '23
Reze will probbly come back in the most chaotic way and die right away since that would be unexpeced
-24
u/drop_of_faith Aug 23 '23
Ew this is already looking like crybaby devilman AND Fire Punch's endgame.
30
u/-leumas barely literate Aug 23 '23
damn so the original trolley problem with the college kid vs the senior citizens had a third solution (killing bat/saving cat) that would ultimately save the most potential people
while in this new one he's kinda forced to choose between Nayuta and Asa on who lives and who dies
Denji's prolly gonna find another loophole to come out on top like when he gave himself brain damage but these are some crazy stakes
25
u/BlueEyed00 Aug 23 '23
Prediction: In the next chapter, Chainsaw Man doesn't go to the rescue and decides to get married after thinking a bit.
33
u/qtUnicorn Aug 23 '23
Anyone else starting to get impatient with all the build-up??
0
u/PlanBisBreakfastNbed Aug 25 '23
This story is uninteresting, especially when compared to the first part. It's lost its charm, characters, and overall, it's just a bore. Part 1 is keeping part 2 afloat, and that's unarguable. If we started at part 2, no one would give a shit about this boring ass series. Even the "buildup" is lackluster, and I find myself skipping months and coming back to literally nothing. What are we 40+ chapters, and THIS is the story? How fucking lame.
4
u/BaDTimeeee Aug 25 '23
Honestly: ABSOLUTELY SAME. I have been patient for quite some time now, since it's been for about ~ 40 Chapters since Part 2 started and so far I have barely been interested in any of it at all. It seems to me more like hashing out for some of the glory that made Part 1 work, while missing key features which made Part 1 ACTUALLY work. If this Manga wants to retain me as an avid watcher it needs to get somewhere and deliver actually something worthwhile soon.
Call me crazy or mean or whatever but pretty much EVERY Character in Part 2 (except for the Penguin) has been mid - to - uninteresting at best.
16
u/Kingfisher818 Aug 25 '23
I’m saving my full opinion until we’ve got the entire Part to read in one go.
Fujimoto’s manga is always at it’s best when you’re binging it in a nihilistic funk going “what the actual fuck” every 5 minutes.
12
u/Macondo_Baklava Aug 25 '23
While I don't share your opinion (I am very much enjoying Part 2 on a weekly release), I can understand where you're coming from. Contrary to what many in this sub will tell you, it's perfectly okay to not like Part 2 as much as Part 1.
The only thing I'd suggest is to remember that Part 1 wasn't as popular and revered when it had the same amount of chapters that Part 2 currently has (around late 2019 I think?). Even when Part 1 finished its run and gained massive attention, it's widely agreed that while the first ~45 chapters are very good, it's the latter half of the manga that really earns Chainsaw Man the recognition and praise it has gotten.
2
u/PlanBisBreakfastNbed Aug 25 '23
I'll be patient because it's not finished. But, even still, I don't think this one will hold as well as part 1. There's no way, especially if you do a chapter to chapter comparison. This story is dragging, has less interesting characters, has worst comedy, and less denji. I can't name a single thing that is on par or even improved upon. I don't care about flashy fight but can we get some dialouge not made by and said by smooth brains? I get it theyr'e, demons and thier quirky, but I'm sorry I'm a human and want some real conversation that eventually lead to some plot. Stakes ??? Conflict ??? Give me something. Denji, being sad about not being CSM, isn't really engaging when the story is called "CSM" so no SHIT he'll stay/turn chainsaw man. It's all predictable now.
13
u/DrMcp00p Aug 25 '23
Im glad this isn't another part 1. Fujimoto has a chance to make this as weird and chaotic and nonsensical as he wants it to be because of part 1's success, and I'm a lot more interested in this than if he played it safe.
Might be a good time to drop off for now and binge it later on when the rest is out in a year or two,
either way let him cook
4
u/PlanBisBreakfastNbed Aug 25 '23
Fuck me for assuming part 1 and part 2 would be similar right? All I can do is wait, but my money's on part 2 killing the momentum of this series and after such an undeniably great start. I've re-read part 1 a handful of times, and it's hard to put down. But this...ehhhh, it's apples to oranges.
8
Aug 24 '23
it’ll get good, I think we’re gonna keep building up for another 10-20 chapters. If you think it’s boring just don’t read it for a year
-10
u/Zip2kx Aug 23 '23
Yeah it's been really boring for a while. It doesn't have the same magic as the first arc at all.
-1
24
u/SmoothieBiscuit456 Aug 23 '23
Brobeni is clearly Kobenis cousin, not brother. Makes the older brother college plothole make sense
17
u/Iron_Kingpin Aug 23 '23
I'm pretty pressed on time so I'll just say that this was one bizarre chapter.
33
u/enricojr Aug 23 '23
Nobody's commented on the fact that the tour guide shares the same last name as Kobeni? Or am I misreading things?
edit: I'm rereading the chapter and I just noticed that the pews in the Chainsawman Church have chainsaw blades as posts. LOL

u/Toxem_ Aug 23 '23
Can we talk about the anti American stuff here? Its feels like, they want to start a war for feed asa.
18
34
u/its-Jai Aug 23 '23
Killing Asa would definitely revoke Denji’s contract with Pochita. The craving for glory, adoration, and thrill is not what Pochita had in mind when he said, “Show me your dreams.”
2
u/DawnB17 Aug 25 '23
It's been a while, so I'm foggy on the details, but did Denji submitting to Makima revoke his contract with Pochita? If not, then I really wonder what the parameters really are.
27
u/TheKittyEmpurror Aug 23 '23
I would argue that Pochita was wanting Denji to LIVE however he choose. Denji's view on the world is fucked to hell and back but there was an honest love between him and his chainsaw
8
61
u/shellycya Aug 23 '23
I love how Denji is standing up for himself and not letting others boss him around. Unless it's by hot girls. Then he'll do anything.
47
u/UnderstandableXO Aug 23 '23
i just want to know why barem keeps his tie in his shirt pocket, that might be the most deranged thing about him
22
u/Zeprarex Aug 23 '23
He looks unimaginably greasy, not like sweatstained, kfc gamer grease, i mean hair grease, john travolta greased lightnin' type of grease
6
u/DawnB17 Aug 25 '23
He looks like Kimblee from Fullmetal Alchemist, and this puts him right on my shit list already.
9
23
u/RyuIzanagi Aug 23 '23
Tie in shirt pocket, sleeves rolled up, hair tied to pony tail. Don't know but feel like he was expecting, preparing for a fight.
7
u/pickledog666 Aug 23 '23
I'd like to think he's greasy from oiling his whole body up so he's slippery and hard to grapple with ala Bronson
29
u/Fitzftw7 Aug 23 '23
Which hybrid is Barem?
34
u/TerryTheCookie Aug 23 '23

That ultraviolet Ray gun thing was so funny, I genuinely did a double take lole "Wait is this actually new CSM lore???" It sounds just like the kind of thing Fujimoto would just drop on us.

I really have the impression that Barem wasn't controlled by Makima... Plus, he seems to have kept his memories.
13
16
u/Tonoukun Aug 23 '23
Welp I guess they’re gonna try to kill Asa now just to push Denji. Imagine we get a parallel to Denji vs Reze with Barem vs Asa. I think she can fare pretty well against a weapon with her having more combat experience recently.
52
32
u/bu_bu_booey Aug 23 '23
Isnt Asa a member of the church? She does not seem like the type to let this shit slide
34
u/cruel-oath Aug 23 '23
It’s possible she’s never even been inside the building, if she was she’d get scared off and Fami wouldn’t allow it
55
u/AnyConsideration3441 Aug 23 '23
Really? Kobeni sacrifices her own future for your education and this is the type of person you become?
Dissapointed in you brobeni.
18
u/sorrymamasorry Aug 23 '23
Her brother is older than her though isn't he? So idk what's up with this brobeni
Fujimotor probably just forgot tbh

Did they ever day she only had one brother? I don't remember

I just like the way he backed out immediately. It's like he's becoming aware that how precious his normal life is now to him compared to when Yoshida first give him the option. My boi Denji's always developing.
57
u/Roscoe_Filburn Aug 23 '23
Okay, who told the Japanese about our ultraviolet ray weapon?

It's not bait. I'm so bored with this arc, and I truly think this is the worst chapter so far.

worst chapter goes to part 1 where the three brothers kill two people of makima.

Aug 23 '23
I'm sure someone has pointed this out already, but Barem is shown with his tie tucked into his pocket as a deliberate design choice. This usually isn't seen as a proper way to wear a tie unless you worked in a particularly messy profession. Old industrial workers would do it to keep their ties from getting caught in machinery, for instance.
This could show that Barem is expecting things involving the church to get messy pretty soon, and on top of that, his sleeves are rolled up, signifying his involvement.
10
u/pickledog666 Aug 23 '23
I appreciate your addition of information about old industrial workers doing that it definitely makes it seem potentially more grim

How else is Fujimoto supposed to convey all this with nonstop action and fight scenes? We've already gotten some crazy ass fights in pt 2. Also, not all of pt 1 was fast-pace either. Like going to Aki's hometown.

I’m kinda sick of every chapter nowadays not really moving the story forward and just having a bunch of weirdness. He gets introduced to the chainsaw man church only to bail on it. I feel like this whole “I can’t be CSM anymore” shit is gonna go on for ages. Remember when he was an asset of Public Safety? Now he just runs from everything. How are we gonna have a story called Chainsaw Man without a Chainsaw Man?
also whatever happened to that doomsday prophecy?
15
u/ZeusByrd Aug 23 '23
Big disagree, while the past two chapters haven’t been as good. There was a solid months or two where every chapter was a straight banger
26
25
u/SkadiQuickMetaMemer Aug 23 '23
That is what the church ia for, Fami way to combat the doomsday and maybe get chainsaw man under her.
34
u/FranekRadziej Aug 23 '23
You don't turn into Chainsaw mana - Asa dies. You turn into Chainsaw mana - Nayuta dies. Sounds like highly traumatic material. Will part 2 be the last, or will Fujimoto decide to harass Denji even longer? The chainsaw mana church gives you the vibe of the first time skip in firepunch. Once this thread develops, plot will no longer be able to return to normality.
5
Aug 23 '23
they'd have to get someone pretty beefy to kill nayuta. they lost a lot of elite members just from the makima incident, and now with the falling devil incident?
5
u/NitroPuncher Aug 23 '23
makima was only hard to kill because she had a contract with the government
5
Aug 23 '23
i imagine that nayuta can shake off some mundane gunshot wounds. She is still a powerful devil, and powerful devils tend to take more punishment before going down for good.
47
