I’m glad in The Revenant the depiction of man vs bear was on par with how it should have gone.

The book really goes into detail on how the bear ragdolls him. The build up to the bear charging is so intense. You know it’s coming but he drags it out.

The movie was good, but that scene in the book is terrifying.

Sounds like I gotta read it.

The book's ending was quite a bit different. The film was superb in its own right, but the book serves up a great moral lesson.

I felt really let down by the film after loving the book

It was beautiful but I think to a fault, and losing some of the raw power of the story

I could totally fight a bear. I mean it would kill me nearly instantly but I could definitely fight one for at least 5 seconds

140

u/Ok-Pomegranate858 18d ago

No_protection... 5 seconds is a very long time.

58

u/No_Protection_88 18d ago

I'm basing it on how long I could outrun a bear. Granted I had like a 10 metre headstart

35

u/SlashEssImplied 18d ago

A bear can run over 13 meters a second. So if you're unlucky enough to get that bear you're still about 3.5 seconds off.

Leo actually fought a bear in that scene. #facts

That’s only because the bear insisted on doing all of its own stunts

And to think that polar bears are even larger and stronger than these awesome beasts. Like everything that grizzlies are, polar bears are higher on the stat sheet and also they’re absolutely going to try and eat you.

622

u/parkwatching 18d ago

Yuuup. Grizzlies don't typically fuck with humans, like they obviously don't want anything to do with you and will maul you if you fuck around in their space, but they rarely stick around after a few swipes and it's almost unheard of that they'd eat you. Polar bears however absolutely will watch, stalk, and kill to eat you and are pretty much the only predator in the entire world that will consistently hunt humans.

567

u/zCiver 18d ago

Grizzlies have denser bones and muscles I believe, since they don't need to be lightweight for extended swimming. I think they are supposed to be the superior fighter.

235

u/smokebandido2x 18d ago

you're right but theres no real difference in bone density/muscle density

both are built proportionally the same w the only physical differences being the size difference, metabolism, and specific adaptations for fighting style

polar bears are much much much bigger than grizzlies. the biggest grizzly subspecies (kodiak) is the size of a medium sized polar bear for example and the average grizzly is dwarfed by the average polar bear(490-700lbs for grizzly, 900-1500lbs for polar)

metabolism wise grizzly bears have a much slower metabolism vs polar bears who eat all meat and fat, and while polar bears have much bigger paws proportionally, their claws are shorter and sharper for holding on to things

fighting style wise grizzlies have more stamina bc of the metabolism difference and are more specialized for swiping and "boxing" while they wrestle (longer claws) whereas polar bears strictly wrestle, hold, and go straight for the neck

in the wild, observed encounters usually end w the polar bear leaving bc they arent actually "fighters" by inclination, theyre almost exclusively killers

its like the bear version of tigers vs lions pretty much. lions routinely fight prolonged combat for territory, tigers are much bigger and stronger and more deadly but rarely fight for long periods of time and just stay away from each other

polar bears like to kill things quickly bc they cant afford the calories(w tigers vs lions its a cardio issue but theres more to it), grizzlies dont mind a long fight bc they can spare the calories and fight fairly regularly

1.9k

u/Brewchowskies 18d ago

What’s wild is the bite strength of these bears, yet their hide escapes the type of damage you’d expect to see. Sure, it gets torn up, but not the utter destruction you’d assume given how strong their bite is. We wouldn’t stand a chance.

1.1k

u/Due_Platypus_3913 18d ago

Their fur has an incredibly dense under-layer.Then a tough hide with dense layers of fatty tissue underneath.Big browns like these are incredibly difficult to seriously injure.

527

u/fieldy409 18d ago

u/YobaiYamete 17d ago

Bears are built to fight bears, crazy enough

Bears are built to fight basically anything. The Romans and Californians both had arenas with animal fights, and bears pretty much always won, to the point where it was so one sided they had to handicap the bears hard to make it interesting.

Bulls, lions, wolves, tigers, ain't nothing smaller than a hippo going 1 vs 1 with a brown bear in an arena fight and winning.

48

u/GarnerYurr 17d ago

Californians

I cant decide if this is a typo or not. I kind of believe it.

I feel like it’s almost beyond our comprehension the shear power that’s being displayed here in every way. I’m very surprised at the endurance.

I provide technical support for HVAC contractors in Texas, and one day had a call from an HVAC tech who used to live in Canada. We got to talking and the conversation turned to bears somehow and he told me he once witnessed a fight like this between a brown bear and a polar bear. He said it wasn’t even close, the polar bear made quick work of the brown bear and threw it around like a rag doll. You could tell by his enthusiasm it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing to witness.

I’m curious how one of these would hold up to fully full size silverback.

Nature is metal!

u/Ok_Soil5348 18d ago

46

u/Klutzy_Inevitable_94 18d ago

A bear is about twice the weight of a gorilla with significantly superior natural weapons. It would be a slaughter. A polar bear is half again the size of a brown bear. That’s why it won so easily.

Does anyone know if that one bear lived to fight another day?

317

u/xBad_Wolfx 18d ago

It is very unusual for territorial bouts like these to end in fatality. That being said… this was vicious. Among the very worst I’ve ever seen with two decades wilderness guiding in the Rockies under my belt.

To my eye, the younger bear had the upper hand for a moment at the start… and that pissed the other guy off. He got ugly with it from there. And even when he has the younger finally submitting at the end… goes in hard a couple more times. Could have easily just gone all in.

As for the damage, it’s hard to see what happened to the face/throat of the younger bear, that could be life threatening even if it just prevents them from being able to eat or fight again. Most of the early stuff was just cosmetic fur fluff flying off. They have very tough skin with a slab of fat underneath that makes it incredibly durable. Those back bites definitely punctured, but there’s nothing vital up there. It’s the face biting and possible throat biting that’s critical.

I'm pretty sure since I saw it once in my dream, so I know what I'm talmabout.

21

u/Gabrielseifer 18d ago

I think I read somewhere that this phenomenon is because in the real world your body is paralyzed by your brain for sleep, so the jelly muscles you have in your dream is the brain arguing with itself over knowing how these things work vs. how you currently are.

People also think a silverback gorilla can beat a grizzly bear in a fight

44

u/Smirk27 18d ago

Watching this video makes me realize a silverback gorilla has about the same chance of killing a bear as a human. Basically zero.

→ More replies (11)

25

u/riding-the-wind 18d ago

I had an edible-fuelled theory about why some people think this, but by the time I woke up the next day, it sounded really stupid.

Ultimately, think people just overestimate how big even a mature silverback is. I mean, they are hefty and powerful. They'd fuck a human up no problem. But taking two equivalently mature male specimens, assume they are both at the upper end of average size (weight AND height), grizzles are alarmingly big.

19

u/DistortoiseLP 18d ago

I think it's also that King Kong and Donkey Kong have oversold the strength and dexterity of a gorilla. I mean they both make them out to be Hulk big but also able to swing like Tarzan and his tribe. Meanwhile bears are often depicted like giant sluggish monsters. Actually the first bear characters I can think of are Winnie the Pooh, Yogi Bear and Paddington, none of whom can take King Kong in a fight.

So that nativete slants the scale in favor of gorillas until you see an actual bear in a fight and see that yeah, no, other animals will be mauled to death by a bear.

Consider asking her if she's on her period, she will see that the increase in hormones has thrown things into hysterics.

Consider asking her if she's on her period

If she says no, kindly remind her that everyday, she edges closer to menopause.

There’s no way a gorilla could even compete with that right?

83

u/Cribsby_critter 18d ago

No way. These bears weigh twice what a gorilla does.

46

u/Blue_Fuzzy_Anteater 18d ago

A silverback on the high end is almost as much as a grizzly on the low end, but I feel like teeth and claws would still win here.

20

u/Cribsby_critter 18d ago

True. I don’t know if these are grizzlies or not. But Alaskan brown bears are even bigger. But yeah, the claws are such a massive advantage.

8

u/SgtPepe 18d ago

The bear has a much thicker hide too, the gorilla would have to go for the eyes or the nuts lol impossible imo.

11

u/Dubya_Tag 18d ago

I’ve always said gorilla, until now. gorilla would have to have a gun

Kept hoping someone would go and break it up. “Bros, bros! Chill!”

u/Anthraxious 17d ago

Yeah while I admire nature, the death and suffering part is always saddening.

There is at least one dude who watched this video all the way through and still imagines that he has a fair shot against a grizzly

69

u/musclesmarinara68 18d ago

And there’s idiots out there that would try to pet and feed these vicious wild animals.

Seriously, how far away from the bears were the photographers? I'd be afraid of catching their attention with all the clicks from the camera. And, like, you know they have to be hungry after a fight like that.

Joe Rogan once said that a person with a martial weapon like a sword wouldn't stand a chance. After seeing this, I agree. You may scratch it, and then it would rip your arms off and beat you with them.

61

u/dealershipdetailer 18d ago

I think you'd need like a 9ft claymore, the strength to actually use it, and one actual attempt at a lunging strike to just completely skewer the beast. Realistically I give it a 1% chance of success

57

u/LongJumpingYou112 18d ago

A skewered bear could very well still kill you before it goes off and dies

That thing was too big to be called a sword. Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron.

Even a firearm won’t guarantee your safety that much. As the saying goes, the only thing more dangerous than a grizzly, is a shot grizzly.

10

u/Shower_Handel 18d ago

Or a grizzly with a gun of its own

I mean, pre-contact First Nations hunters did occasionally kill Grizzlies with stone tipped spears and arrows.

It is something best done by a dozen or so expert hunters attacking from ambush, but it can be done.

I miss it when that podcast was more questions like, “how long could I last in a fight with a house cat.” He does have a real respect for how well feral and wild would obliterate humans way more than we are comfortable thinking about.

Simpler times.

That's the most evenly matched bear fight I've ever seen. I can't even tell which one is bigger.

u/TamponCannon 18d ago

Idk what fight you were watching but that smaller bear got fuckin piped
