And to think that polar bears are even larger and stronger than these awesome beasts. Like everything that grizzlies are, polar bears are higher on the stat sheet and also they’re absolutely going to try and eat you.

u/parkwatching 18d ago
Yuuup. Grizzlies don't typically fuck with humans, like they obviously don't want anything to do with you and will maul you if you fuck around in their space, but they rarely stick around after a few swipes and it's almost unheard of that they'd eat you. Polar bears however absolutely will watch, stalk, and kill to eat you and are pretty much the only predator in the entire world that will consistently hunt humans.

Grizzlies have denser bones and muscles I believe, since they don't need to be lightweight for extended swimming. I think they are supposed to be the superior fighter.
235
u/smokebandido2x 18d ago
you're right but theres no real difference in bone density/muscle density
both are built proportionally the same w the only physical differences being the size difference, metabolism, and specific adaptations for fighting style
polar bears are much much much bigger than grizzlies. the biggest grizzly subspecies (kodiak) is the size of a medium sized polar bear for example and the average grizzly is dwarfed by the average polar bear(490-700lbs for grizzly, 900-1500lbs for polar)
metabolism wise grizzly bears have a much slower metabolism vs polar bears who eat all meat and fat, and while polar bears have much bigger paws proportionally, their claws are shorter and sharper for holding on to things
fighting style wise grizzlies have more stamina bc of the metabolism difference and are more specialized for swiping and "boxing" while they wrestle (longer claws) whereas polar bears strictly wrestle, hold, and go straight for the neck
in the wild, observed encounters usually end w the polar bear leaving bc they arent actually "fighters" by inclination, theyre almost exclusively killers
its like the bear version of tigers vs lions pretty much. lions routinely fight prolonged combat for territory, tigers are much bigger and stronger and more deadly but rarely fight for long periods of time and just stay away from each other
polar bears like to kill things quickly bc they cant afford the calories(w tigers vs lions its a cardio issue but theres more to it), grizzlies dont mind a long fight bc they can spare the calories and fight fairly regularly

What’s wild is the bite strength of these bears, yet their hide escapes the type of damage you’d expect to see. Sure, it gets torn up, but not the utter destruction you’d assume given how strong their bite is. We wouldn’t stand a chance.

Their fur has an incredibly dense under-layer.Then a tough hide with dense layers of fatty tissue underneath.Big browns like these are incredibly difficult to seriously injure.

Bears are built to fight bears, crazy enough
Bears are built to fight basically anything. The Romans and Californians both had arenas with animal fights, and bears pretty much always won, to the point where it was so one sided they had to handicap the bears hard to make it interesting.
Bulls, lions, wolves, tigers, ain't nothing smaller than a hippo going 1 vs 1 with a brown bear in an arena fight and winning.

I feel like it’s almost beyond our comprehension the shear power that’s being displayed here in every way. I’m very surprised at the endurance.
I provide technical support for HVAC contractors in Texas, and one day had a call from an HVAC tech who used to live in Canada. We got to talking and the conversation turned to bears somehow and he told me he once witnessed a fight like this between a brown bear and a polar bear. He said it wasn’t even close, the polar bear made quick work of the brown bear and threw it around like a rag doll. You could tell by his enthusiasm it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing to witness.
I’m curious how one of these would hold up to fully full size silverback.

A bear is about twice the weight of a gorilla with significantly superior natural weapons. It would be a slaughter. A polar bear is half again the size of a brown bear. That’s why it won so easily.

Does anyone know if that one bear lived to fight another day?
317
u/xBad_Wolfx 18d ago
It is very unusual for territorial bouts like these to end in fatality. That being said… this was vicious. Among the very worst I’ve ever seen with two decades wilderness guiding in the Rockies under my belt.
To my eye, the younger bear had the upper hand for a moment at the start… and that pissed the other guy off. He got ugly with it from there. And even when he has the younger finally submitting at the end… goes in hard a couple more times. Could have easily just gone all in.
As for the damage, it’s hard to see what happened to the face/throat of the younger bear, that could be life threatening even if it just prevents them from being able to eat or fight again. Most of the early stuff was just cosmetic fur fluff flying off. They have very tough skin with a slab of fat underneath that makes it incredibly durable. Those back bites definitely punctured, but there’s nothing vital up there. It’s the face biting and possible throat biting that’s critical.

→ More replies (11)25
u/riding-the-wind 18d ago
I had an edible-fuelled theory about why some people think this, but by the time I woke up the next day, it sounded really stupid.
Ultimately, think people just overestimate how big even a mature silverback is. I mean, they are hefty and powerful. They'd fuck a human up no problem. But taking two equivalently mature male specimens, assume they are both at the upper end of average size (weight AND height), grizzles are alarmingly big.
→ More replies (5)19
u/DistortoiseLP 18d ago
I think it's also that King Kong and Donkey Kong have oversold the strength and dexterity of a gorilla. I mean they both make them out to be Hulk big but also able to swing like Tarzan and his tribe. Meanwhile bears are often depicted like giant sluggish monsters. Actually the first bear characters I can think of are Winnie the Pooh, Yogi Bear and Paddington, none of whom can take King Kong in a fight.
So that nativete slants the scale in favor of gorillas until you see an actual bear in a fight and see that yeah, no, other animals will be mauled to death by a bear.

Shows you what absolute tanks bears are! Those huge claws taking large chunks of fur out of each other, powerful jaws locked onto each other’s faces yet they keep going for several minutes before even showing any fatigue. And you know that even under that dense fur coat both of these bears did a number on one another. That was a pretty evenly-matched fight!
