TNG had the species with enforced non-binary, DS9 had the Changelings, who would take gender forms, but didn't have gender. Both had the Trill, who are bonded with a symbiote worm that gets passed from host to host, regardless of gender, so Jadzia Dax was called "Old Man" affectionately by Sisko since he was mentored by the previous host, Curzon Dax.

u/Kage9866 May 30 '23

u/backstageninja May 31 '23
I never really got into ST but I've seen a few episodes from all of them. If I had to pick one to watch it would definitely be DS9
8
u/Hara-Kiri May 31 '23
Really DS9 is one that is bad for dipping into one episodes, because what makes it the best Trek (popular opinion) is the massive over arching war that goes on over the series. For one off episodes TnG wins.
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (1)3
u/AtlasActual May 31 '23
It's worth getting into.
My friend told me DS9 is really slow until the last two seasons, 5-7. He was right. It's like watching an airport shopping concourse. But, it has really fantastic moments. It took me a year to get through to those last seasons but he was right. Those were some of the finest episodes of television.
28
u/TheRnegade May 30 '23
We don't even need to jump into sci-fi for examples. Male seahorses are the ones who get pregnant with children. Worms are hermaphrodites and can be both. That's just two examples from our own planet. Not to mention there are still plenty of undiscovered creatures at the depths of our seas we have yet to document.
27
u/backstageninja May 31 '23
Some species engage in penis fencing where they duel each other until one pierces the skin of the other and injects his sperm. The loser then becomes the mother and raises the offspring.
Sometimes they inject each other and both become mothers
11
u/Ok_Cow8044 May 30 '23
They don't actually get pregnant, the female just lays her eggs in his pouch and he incubates but I agree too much is unknown.
14
u/saltporksuit May 30 '23
If I donate an egg to another human being I’m not the one who’s pregnant. The one growing the fertilized egg in their body is pregnant.
6
u/Ok_Cow8044 May 31 '23
mouthbreeder, any fish that breeds its young in the mouth. Examples include certain catfishes, cichlids, and cardinal fishes. The male of the sea catfish Galeichthys felis places up to 50 fertilized eggs in its mouth and retains them until they are hatched and the young are two or more weeks old.
By your logic the males that do this are the ones that are pregnant, correct?
6
u/UnsubstantiatedClaim May 31 '23
Yes, correct. That is what they are saying.

Twitter was a place where the everyday person could have their voice heard or where groups could organize for positive change (remember the Arab Spring?). Elon and his rich buddies don't like that. Easiest way to stop it was to buy it and encourage the toxicity.
86
u/Interest-Desk May 30 '23
To be fair, I don’t even think other rich people like Elon anymore.
15
May 31 '23
Dude Elon is doing them all a huge service.
Keep fighting over dumb bullshit though everyone. This entire thread is so fucking embarrassing, like every other thread where we discuss the 'rich being against each other' facade.
They love when you all bicker and not focus on your masters owning your lives.
Twitter was arguably the single largest free speech mobilization platform ever and the world's "richest" man put an end to that. But yeah guys go off about his "losses" holy fuck.
I'm ready to form a religion around simulation hypothesis, you all have to be variables in a fucked up simulation.

I hate Elon as much as everybody else here, but Twitter was a shithole all the time. Your point that the everyday person could have their voice heard is also the main problem. I never saw so much toxicity and bullshit takes on any other platform. I’m happy I deleted it years ago.
26
u/Mary-U May 31 '23
Twitter was a shithole before Musk bought it. The point is, he managed to make it worse.
That’s some 4D chess level fuck up.
2
u/dinoman9877 May 31 '23
I'm afraid to say I've seen takes at least as bad bad and sometimes even worse than the ones on Twitter, right here on Reddit. And that's WITHOUT going into all the right-wing, fascist supporting subreddits.

Twitter has definitely always had it's share of toxicity but it's only gotten worse over the past few years, then went into overdrive when Musk took over.
As someone who still uses twitter, I can tell you that twitter is becoming a bit of a ghost town. Half my feed is now filled with "recommended" and ads, instead of content from people I follow.

In many countries, specifically middle eastern ones, Twitter became the bane of governemnts becuase it impowered and allowed various rights groups to better unify and communicate against the sources of their oppression.
Im sure it has nothing to do with that. /s

It felt… off. I realized that they might have a place in all of this, before this I thought they were all sheananigans.
9
u/nightfire36 May 31 '23
It's the power of SF. When you add the abstractions of fiction, it's easier to accept conventions that otherwise seem odd.
197
u/-cocoadragon May 30 '23
Confused, wouldn't a type 2 or 3 civilization have moved on from gender?
122
u/CaypoH May 30 '23
Type 1 civ would probably offload reproduction onto machines, especially as it would start serious efforts in space habitation, making the whole concept largely obsolete. But us getting there with reactionary psychos in power doesn't seem viable.
24
u/kiwichick286 May 31 '23
That's what I think too!! There will be no meaningful space exploration unless people come together to innovate, instead of crying over pronouns and drag Queens, treating women, POC, and other marginalised people as subhuman. Until right wing fascism is eliminated, we're going nowhere...fast.

I think advanced Aliens would be very confused by a bunch of seemingly functioning adults projecting their issues onto others as they engage in child level tactics while retaining a platform.

How dare you say that, let me inform you that men were made from mud and females from ribs, any other explanation is nonsense.
5
u/SeneInSPAAACE May 31 '23
Fun fact: "Rib" is a mistranslation. The actual one would be more like "side" or "half", but... y'know, if we say that Adam was split in half and made into male and female, it's harder to justify women being inferior in a patriarchal society.
4
u/Alternative-Lack6025 May 31 '23
I've heard about that, also I've heard that it was supposed to refer to the bone on the penis that practically all mammals have, that's why humans don't have it.
And there's also Adam's first wife Lilith, made from the same mud and who refused to be seen as inferior and subsequently vanished from Eden.

It sounds like Elon decided to become a full-time POS after someone hurt or left him. It must be their problem." No dude, it's you.

The fact that Billionaire Genius Inventor Elon MUSK could not come up with ANYTHING more complex than the one thing that will never be attracted to him, instead of fossile fuels, Nanomachines, or why 50 Shades of Grey, while depicting a wildly toxic and unrealistic bond, became THE Book to have read and not admit to it, is telling.
It mainly tells that Elon Musk is not a genius inventor.
7
u/electrorazor May 30 '23
Ngl I completely agree with Elon on this one. If an alien race is entirely gender non specific that would make explaining what a woman is properly even harder. Even more so if the aliens don't have different biological sexes either. Just cause they're advanced doesn't mean our concepts of gender identity aren't foreign to them

Im so annoyed by musk's comment.... not that an alien shouldn't think sexes on earth is an interesting concept. They might I guess... But more what his statement says about his own way of thinking. Why does he say woman and not man? Indirectly he is saying that the woman is the oddity in society and the man is the status quo... If he wanted to say that ailiens would think that sexes on earth is an interesting concept. He could have said that. But no instead the odd thing about Earth is females. Because it would be very normal if the whole Earth was full of men? If it would be full of women would it still be odd? I don't get his point completely but I feel it smells of the old dying way of thinking that women are less human than men (going back to Adam and Eve and Adam being the standard sex and the first sex). And then all the rest of history's bullshit. The sexes have never existed without each other without the woman there is no man and vice versa so why point on the female sex as being the non-standard for 1111111111th time again?
