DLSS 3.5 FAQ
What is DLSS 3.5?
NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 features Ray Reconstruction, a new AI model that creates higher quality ray-traced images for intensive ray-traced games and apps.
DLSS 3.5 is a suite of AI rendering technologies powered by Tensor Cores on GeForce RTX GPUs for faster frame rates, better image quality, and great responsiveness. DLSS now includes Super Resolution & DLAA (available for all RTX GPUs), Frame Generation (RTX 40 Series GPUs), and Ray Reconstruction (available for all RTX GPUs)
How does DLSS 3.5 work?
DLSS Ray Reconstruction adds additional AI to the ray-tracing lighting pipeline by replacing multiple hand-tuned denoisers and adding a combined AI model for Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction, addressing image quality challenges associated with a denoiser and high frequency information loss during upscaling.
Is DLSS Ray Reconstruction for path traced games, RT games or both?
DLSS Ray Reconstruction is most advantageous to games that use ray tracing heavily. Path tracing definitely falls into that category. It can also provide advantages to games that use ray tracing on multiple effects.
Can we expect Ray Reconstruction to be a separate setting in game menus like Frame Generation?
Yes. There is a new Ray Reconstruction toggle available when Super Resolution is ON.
Why does Ray Reconstruction require Super Resolution to be on?
Because Ray Reconstruction is a combined AI model with Super Resolution to address the image quality issues that occur when there is high-frequency detail loss during the denoising/upscaling stage of the ray-tracing pipeline.
Does DLSS 3.5 improve performance or take away performance?
Performance varies based on the number of ray-traced effects. Games with multiple ray-traced effects may have several denoisers that are replaced by the single Ray Reconstruction neural network. In these cases, Ray Reconstruction can also offer a performance boost. In titles with less intensive ray tracing and fewer denoisers, Ray Reconstruction improves image quality though may have a slight performance cost.
Compatibility
- GeForce RTX 40 Series users can combine Super Resolution and Frame Generation with Ray Reconstruction.
- GeForce RTX 20 and 30 Series users can add Ray Reconstruction to their AI-powered technologies, alongside Super Resolution and DLAA.

I'm actually quite excited to see how well Ray Reconstruction works.
It could make Path Tracing in more games viable (combined with upscaling of course).
Right now, it looks too noisy in certain places and I couldn't find myself using it for too long.

Right now, it looks too noisy in certain places
Especially if you enter a close space like a car or a building, it becomes very noisy and the FPS tanks too. This ray reconstruction tech is exactly for this purpose. To eliminate the noise while giving slight boost in the FPS.

It is super noisy when you look at ingame garbage bags (and there are plenty of those lying around).

This was one of my issues using path tracing in cyberpunk, any kind of DLSS use made the inside of cars look absolutely horrible, there seems to be pretty big issues with mesh fences aswell.

I'm really curious if ray reconstruction is just a fancy term for their radiance caching or if that's something completely separate and not yet implemented. Because if they're different then that's yet another technique that will improve path tracing significantly. Exciting times.
10
u/St3fem 9d ago
Apparently ray reconstruction is an AI denoiser that combine with an upscaler to solve the problem of denoising before upscaling which remove a lot of useful data for the upscaling pass and that just happen to be way better at recognizing how light works from the very few sample available
NRC looks to be a different thing
3
u/zzzxxx0110 8d ago
No it's completely separate. Think of it like the difference between DLSS Super Resolution and DLSS Frame Generation, but for rays.
Radiance Caching is using AIs to generate completely nonexistent rays, so you get RT rendering without actually doing RT computation, at least for parts of the image.
DLSS Ray Reconstruction is that you do still do conventional RT computation, but you use an AI powered magically powerful denoisor for the denoising pass, and because of that you can use a much less number of ray count in your RT computation to get the same image quality, thus exponentially reduce the performance cost of your RT pipeline, or give you significantly higher image quality with the same number of ray counts especially for a lot of the high frequency and transient image details.

, it looks too noisy in certain places and I couldn't find myself using it for too long.
Ah so i played a bit around after getting my 7900xtx and thought this was an fsr issue or i did sth wrong. The lighting with path tracing looks great. Like not particular great itself but it behaves incredibly realostic. It feels organic. Reflections somehow dont get much better and the floor.... Like it looks noisy (i called them artefacts but noisy is a much better term). Like tiled floors look actually bad and some things like the face in the mirror Look like through a dirty lense etc. So that wasn't my fault.
Why does that noise happen? I kinda had the constant feeling that i should turn the Light on or rub my eyes in interiors. And it feels like texturs don't really work properly. Given, cdpr says the path tracing is only experimental.
In the hope to not spark an "fsr bad" discussion in this sub, but i also noticed how the noise actually messew with fsr. Like normal Game looks good, fsr quality loojs the same, more fsr and it doesn't "pop" anymore, then looses Detail, then looks shitty. Those are basically the settings for fsr. When path tracing is on, some issues with fsr go away... But the floor... The fsr slider becomes a "floor quality" slider. Like you don't notice anymore how fsr changes anything but the floor, and everything below Quality looks Instantly like complete garbage. Somehow the noise gets multiplied by a lot by simply having fsr on.... But only for the floor (like for everything else too but not as noticeable).

u/N7even AMD 5800X3D | RTX 4090 24GB | 32GB 3600Mhz 9d ago
I'm not very technically knowledgeable, but it might be because path tracing is much more demanding and the GPU simply cannot keep up with the limited amount of light bounce data to be able to render lighting clearly.
Closed indoor lighting must bounce many more times, hence there is much more data to process.

2
u/OkPiccolo0 9d ago
The quality of path tracing/noise is directly tied to your resolution. Running at 4K DLSS balanced mode (2227x1253) looks quite good. Ray reconstruction is going to help fix a bunch of the imperfections but since that's not an option for you I'd suggest just loading the game at native 1440p just to get an idea of what it should look like. Unfortunately it's going to be a slide show.

u/jzuijlek 9d ago
Oh man, are you kidding me? DLSS 3.5 in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty?! My GPU is practically drooling – or it would be if it wasn't a solid piece of silicon. I mean, I've been geeking out about ray tracing for ages, and now with Ray Reconstruction?
It's like giving a wizard a lightsaber.
Imagine cruising Night City with those slick ray-traced puddles looking even shinier! I might just spend half my gameplay time staring at neon reflections. Forget chasing bad guys, I'll be chasing pixels! And if this boosts frame rates too? My monitor will need to wear sunglasses. It's like the future just got a graphics update.
Game on! 🎮😂

I wonder if ray reconstruction will work on older game via the dll swap.
I noticed that more small objects on the floor have shadows now in ray reconstruction.

make sure to install hwinfo64 and check the GPU 16PIN HVPWR Voltage to be above 12, if it gets to like 11.5 means not inserted cable fully or faulty cable

To add to this, since it's not the clearest statement ever and there is some nuance to this that is kinda lost; some vdroop (voltage drop) under load is totally normal, and fine. 11.9 or even probably 11.8 isn't cause for much concern. Much lower though, especially without load, and yea, it may be time to check your cable to make sure you installed it properly, or consider a new one.

hoowee that’s an upgrade! i got a 4090 a week ago and it’s been eating Starfield for breakfast.
does anyone know if DLSS 3.5 + RR actually improves image quality vs native 4K?

Cyberpunk2077 is the most unique FPS I’ve ever played. In the 3 years it has been out, I have not seen anything like it, or any other dev try to imitate it. I’m playing Starfield and having the best time with it. However, in SF you can feel the bones of the systems Bethesda has made since before Morrowind. It works, it’s still fun. But you can feel yourself playing Skyrim or Fallout when playing SF; it’s just how the mechanics feel. There is absolutely nothing in Cyberpunk that makes me feel like Im playing something else. I believe that fact will win out in how successful CP2077 will end up being, when looking back. I’m playing this DLC regardless of getting this giveaway or not, but it would life changing to be able to tweak this game with all new performance overhead.

I'm very excited about Ray Reconstruction. Given that it works well enough it should make Path Tracing much more usable. I love Ray Tracing in Cyberpunk. It's probably one of the best implementations we've ever seen and I'd love to crank up those settings.

Excited to get even more immersed in the game as I will now be able to see individual blood cells during combat in the game :)
2
u/OneIShot 8d ago
Ray reconstruction really makes the game even more of a night and day difference between RTX and without. So excited to see the tech visually move forward even more.
2
u/NIGos 7d ago
Is anyone else experiencing heavy object trailing with the new Ray Reconstruction? Eyes smudge when blinking, faces warp when turning and also the cursor while using terminals shows lots of ghosting (Corpo intro - terminal in the booth after meeting with Jenkins).
If I disable Ray Reconstruction all the smearing goes away.
This is with the newest drivers installed (clean installation) and new game install.
Seems that RR should prevent exactly this issue so I am puzzled that it now looks even worse.

My AI overlord (bard) says
I am most excited about the potential of DLSS 3.5 to make Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty look and run even better. DLSS 3.5 is a new version of NVIDIA's deep learning super sampling technology that introduces a new AI-powered rendering technique called Ray Reconstruction. This new technique improves the image quality and the detail of ray-traced lighting in effects in games that make good use of RT.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that already makes extensive use of ray tracing, so it is likely to benefit greatly from DLSS 3.5. I am particularly excited to see how DLSS 3.5 improves the quality of ray-traced reflections and global illumination in the game.
In addition to improving image quality, DLSS 3.5 can also significantly boost frame rates. This is especially important for Cyberpunk 2077, which is a demanding game that can be difficult to run at high resolutions and frame rates.
Overall, I believe that DLSS 3.5 has the potential to make Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty the most visually impressive and performant version of the game yet. I am eager to try it out for myself when it is released.
:D

u/ViperBite308 9d ago

Excited to see where this technology can take future gaming. It’s looking glorious!
2
u/rulzZz23 9d ago
Is the enhancement in image quality. The sharpness and detail that this technology brings make the gaming experience even more immersive. As for the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update, I’m thrilled about the new missions and the expansion of the game world. I can’t wait to explore the new areas and take on the new challenges!

u/Robitaille20 9d ago
I think the promise of what 3.5 brings to the table with the 4000 series cards is incredible and is exciting for the future of gaming - however the price of cards these days is pricing people out of the full experience. I would love to own a 4080 or 4090, but after biting the bullet and paying the price for a 3080 soon after release (I did get it for MSRP thankfully) I just can't justify the thought of spending the money for the new cards although I really want one. These pricing models are making gaming a niche market and I can see it pushing more and more people to the console world, and it's a shame.

u/Mrhungry- 8d ago
Eh, kinda. How many people buy 1000$ phones every other year or 3? We buy things we use and see value in. I went from a Nokia flip to a razor to a blackberry to an iPhone 6s Plus to a 13 pro max. Def way less upgrades than most ppl… gpus were 5850 to 960 to 2070 super to 3080 to 4090. Maybe Nvidia will figure out how to finance cards similarly to the way cell phones are. Paying 60 monthly for your 1200 phone bundled together with plan is easier to swallow than one time pay.. I really think this might be what’s needed to blow the roof off gpu sales as it’ll help younger gamers find a way to buy newer and better cards. Sure, it’ll also put some of the youth in possibly tough spots financially or encourage impulse buying but hey, it’s America after all… haha. Gpu industry would be going so damn strong if sales volume 3-5xed in the next year or two with deals like this..

u/SpiritLBC 9d ago
I can't wait for the path-tracing in general. I felt that even psycho mode was super transformative before and now overdrive is making CP77 an even bigger eye-candy.
Very excited for 3.5 as ray reconstruction looks great at cleaning up all those artifacts from using low base resolution.
As for the game, I'm excited for vehicular combat. I love car chase sequences in games and hope that we have a lot of them in here. Why would they advertise it so much, right?
Also, revised skill tree is neat, old one was so broken and felt so soulless.

Ray Reconstruction a.k.a better denoiser opens a path to better graphics without sacrificing performance. I hope developers of older games would be willing to experiment and implement in their games too which support raytracing.

Saw a few questions around when DLSS 3.5 will be released. This is a direct copy from the article sub-heading.
"Cyberpunk 2077 players can enhance their experience with DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction in the Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode in the base game on September 21st, and in the Phantom Liberty expansion from September 26th."
1
u/greensparten 9d ago
Ray Reconstruction is what excites me. I think its amazing how AI is not able to clean up the image by addressing the de-noiseer, etc. Watching NVIDIA leap frog every year is increadible.
When it comes to Cyber Punk Phantom Liberty for me its all about the focused narrative around the intriguing character played by Idris Elba.
For CyberPunk 2077, believe it or not I have had it for a year, and only touched it a bit. I felt the skill tree could be better, and so knowing what CDPR did with Witcher 3 with its major overhaul updates, I knew something like this was coming to CP 2077, so I waited.
I cant wait to try the game with the new character builds.

im a bit out of the loop with dlss. does using dlss set to quality for example, look better than just playing at native resolution with dlss off?
im assuming that dlss set to quality will still offer better performance than with dlss off completely, but what about in regards to image quality?

the thing that excites me the most about DLSS 3.5 in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is the potential to experience the game's stunning visuals with full ray tracing enabled, even on lower-end hardware. I am also excited about the possibility of using DLSS 3.5 to boost frame rates and improve performance in other demanding games.
I am also excited about the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update, but I am more interested in the new features and content than the bug fixes and performance improvements. I am curious to see what new quests, items, and locations CD Projekt Red has in store for players.
Overall, I am excited about both DLSS 3.5 and the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 update. I think both of these things will make Cyberpunk 2077 an even better game.

DLSS 3.5 with Ray Reconstruction will be coming to Cyberpunk 2077 with the game’s 2.0 update on September 21st.
DLSS 3.5 with Ray Reconstruction will be available September 26th in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, along with full ray tracing.
so can we use ray reconstruction on the 21st or do we need to buy the DLC to unlock it? i dont understand

Honestly? The performance gain. I want to turn the graphics up to max on my 1440p monitor and just immerse myself in Night City and just chill. The 2.0 update rehauling the game is incredible too, can't wait to see how the police or NPCs react to the player now.

I built my current rig in 1999. It was state of the art at the time. Would love to have new hardware to run Cyberpunk on a new state of the art rig.

I’m most excited to seeing the city streets at night when it’s raining in maxed out settings.

I can't wait to build a new computer and try this out, among other games. 1800x and 1080 TI showing their age.

CP2077 is the most amazing looking game I own. I’d love to be able to turn on RTX Overdrive when 2.0 comes out. And I’m looking forward to both 2.0 and Phantom Liberty equally since the system changes will make this game I’ll be playing for years to come

Would love to get the 4080, so i can give it to my partner so she Can be amazed of all the fancy ray tracing, or she can take full advantage of DLSS 3.5. And that we can start to play together😌

Does dlss 3.5 look better overall than 3.1 for example? Or is it just better RT image?
